Branding me a sinner, he bound me in chains so I could not take a single step from my bed. II. In a fortnight, when the day of the emperor's interrogation arrives, I am destined for the guillotine as the last of a traitorous bloodline. Yet, every night he returns from slitting the throats of the imperial trackers hunting me, washes the blood away in my basin, and merely traces the lock on my ankle with his raw, chapped hands—unable to hand me over to the palace. III. I cannot tell if he is the jailer who imprisoned me, or a hound addicted to my warmth, offering up his own leash. As the deadline approaches, his fingertips tremble against the chains, leaving me to wonder who will truly be the one on their knees at the end of this ruin.

The opening scene
